Job Profile
There is an opening for a Temporary Gardener position within the Infrastructure Services – Operations Division is available immediately. The Temporary Gardener assists with the City of Cambridge's horticulture programs. Performs functions in accordance with established standard operating procedures, departmental and corporate policies, sound horticulture construction and maintenance principles and practices, with a focus on providing excellent customer service and continuous improvement processes. Reporting to the Supervisor of Horticulture, the following requirements apply:
What you will be doing
Perform horticulture duties such as design and maintenance of citywide garden features that include the preparation and planting of annuals, maintenance of trees, perennials, shrubs, as well as the watering, pruning, fertilizing, cultivating, and mulching of beds and gardens to enhance horticultural areas within parks, road allowance & traffic medians throughout the City of Cambridge.
Assist with greenhouse operations and the growing and maintenance of various plant materials, such as: propagating, planting, fertilization, transplanting, pruning, chemical control and watering.
Grass cutting/trimming, vegetation control, maintenance and landscaping on boulevards, parks, trails, trail heads, city owned lands and facilities as scheduled or as required.
Demonstrate a sound understanding of the safe and efficient use and basic maintenance of all job-related tools and equipment including line trimmers, rototillers, brush chippers, agricultural/ sidewalk tractors and implements, loader, trailer, snow blowers, chainsaws, rotary & flail mowers, leaf blowers, sod cutters, rakes, shovels etc.
Perform watering duties in city gardens and other floral features.
Education
College diploma in horticulture technician, greenhouse technician, landscape technician, turf management or a related discipline is required.
Minimum Requirements
Over 24 months of work-related experience in similar role
A valid Ontario Class G driver’s license in good standing
A valid Landscape/Greenhouse Exterminator Pesticide license is required
Expertise in all areas of horticulture including design, disease and insect problems soils and plant propagation
Possess advanced knowledge of Greenhouse operation inc. mechanical heating, lighting, plumbing, air circulation.
Ability to operate small gardening/landscape equipment and hand tools
Meets requirements of Physical Demands Analysis for position

Current and valid Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position.
Proof of your current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications.
Valid G driver's license.
Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate from the Ministry of Labour. (may be obtained post offer)
Your compensation
This position is within the outside workers union Salary Schedule Grade 5 and has a hourly range (2026 Rates) of:
Starting Rate: $33.72
12 Month Rate: $34.76
24 Month Rate: $35.81
Comprehensive Benefits Package including Health Care, Dental, Vacation Days etc. included.
Ontario Municipal Employee Retirement Plan (OMERS) is also included.
