Job Description

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Production and Crop Operations

· Supervise and coordinate employees engaged in sod and nursery stock production, maintenance, harvesting, and shipping activities.

· Oversee field preparation, cultivation, irrigation, fertilization, pest management, spraying, harvesting, and product handling operations.

· Monitor crop health, growing conditions, and environmental factors to ensure optimal production and quality.

· Inspect sod and nursery stock to ensure company quality standards are maintained.

· Coordinate harvesting schedules and shipping activities to meet customer requirements and operational deadlines.

· Assist with the implementation of quality improvement initiatives to enhance crop performance and production efficiency.

Staff Supervision and Training

· Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise production employees.

· Assign daily work duties and develop employee work schedules.

· Monitor employee performance and provide ongoing coaching and instruction.

· Ensure employees follow company policies, operational procedures, and safety requirements.

· Participate in employee evaluations and provide recommendations regarding hiring, training, and performance management.

Safety and Compliance

· Assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of workplace health and safety procedures.

· Conduct regular safety meetings and workplace inspections.

· Ensure safe operation of equipment, machinery, vehicles, and production systems.

· Train employees in safe work practices, equipment operation, pesticide handling, and personal protective equipment requirements.

· Report and document workplace incidents, hazards, and corrective actions.

Equipment, Infrastructure, and Inventory

· Supervise the maintenance and operation of farm equipment, machinery, irrigation systems, production facilities, and related infrastructure.

· Coordinate equipment servicing and repairs to minimize downtime.

· Monitor inventory levels of production supplies, materials, and equipment.

· Assist with identifying equipment, machinery, and supply requirements and provide recommendations to management.

Shipping, Distribution, and Logistics

· Coordinate harvesting, loading, shipping, and delivery schedules.

· Work closely with drivers, dispatch personnel, and operations staff to ensure timely and efficient product delivery.

· Provide troubleshooting support and operational guidance to field personnel and drivers when required.

Record Keeping and Quality Control

· Maintain production, harvesting, inventory, shipping, and quality control records.

· Prepare operational reports related to production activities, labour utilization, equipment usage, and crop performance.

· Monitor product quality and ensure customer specifications are met.

· Assist with tracking production volumes and operational performance metrics.

General Duties

· Assist with landscape installation and maintenance activities when operational requirements demand.

· Coordinate crews involved in nursery, turf, landscape, and grounds maintenance activities.

· Perform general production and operational duties as required.

· Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to improve efficiency, safety, product quality, and customer service.

Qualifications

Education:
  • College/Technical Training or Trades Certificate,
Skills & Professional Training
  • Driver's License - G
  • Clean Driving Record

Experience

· Minimum 1 year of experience in nursery production, sod farming, horticulture, landscaping, agriculture, or a related industry.

· Previous supervisory experience is required.

· Experience coordinating employees, equipment, and production activities in a fast-paced environment.

Skills and Knowledge

· Knowledge of sod production, nursery operations, irrigation systems, crop health management, harvesting practices, and quality control procedures.

· Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

· Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, POS systems, and operational software.

· Ability to coordinate multiple priorities while maintaining safety and quality standards.
