Job Description

About the Position

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on HeadGardener to lead the care of a large private estate garden while overseeing the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the property's exterior. This role combines expert gardening knowledge with the coordination of seasonal maintenance, outdoor contractors, and estate grounds to ensure the property is maintained to an exceptional standard.

Key Responsibilities

- Maintain extensive perennial gardens, ornamental plantings, shrubs, and seasonal displays

- Perform planting, weeding, deadheading, mulching, edging, fertilizing, watering, and pruning

- Monitor plant health and identify deficiencies

- Maintain garden tools, equipment, and supplies

- Manage inventories and order garden materials as required

- Follow seasonal maintenance schedules to ensure the property is maintained to a consistently high standard

- Coordinate with outside contractors and service providers when required

- Oversee seasonal property opening and closing activities

- Keep all exterior living spaces, walkways, patios, and recreational areas clean, organized, and presentation-ready

- Perform basic property maintenance as needed

Qualifications

- Minimum 5 years of professional gardening or horticultural experience

- Strong knowledge of perennial gardens, ornamental plants, trees, shrubs, and seasonal plant care

- Experience with pruning techniques, soil health, irrigation practices, and integrated pest management

- Excellent organizational and time-management skills

- Ability to work independently while maintaining consistently high standards

- Physically capable of performing demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions

- Professional, dependable, and respectful of privacy and confidentiality

- Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence with a clean driving record

- Legally authorized to work in Canada

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience maintaining private estates or high-end residential properties

- Formal horticultural education or related certifications

- Basic handyman or equipment maintenance experience

Schedule

Typical hours are Monday to Friday, approximately 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional flexibility required during peak gardening periods or weather-related events.
