Job Description

West Van Irrigation Ltd. (operating as WVI Irrigation Service & Installation) is hiring an Operations Manager - Irrigation and Landscape Lighting.

Location of work: North Vancouver, BC. Field supervision and hands-on work occur at client sites across the North Shore, including West Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Terms of employment: Contract, full-time, 3-year term, year-round. 40 hours per week. Start date: as soon as possible. Vacancies: 1. Language of work: English.

Compensation: $42.50 per hour, 40 hours per week, or $85,000 annually. Benefits include five weeks of paid vacation per year and a group benefits package through the BCCA Employee Benefit Trust.

About the employer: West Van Irrigation Ltd. designs, installs, services and winterizes irrigation systems for residential and commercial properties on the North Shore of Vancouver, and installs and services landscape lighting through its Cypress Landscape Lighting division.

Job duties:

- Supervise and coordinate the daily work of the irrigation and landscape lighting field crew, confirming assignments and readiness at the start of each day and resolving field problems as they arise.

- Establish work schedules, decide technician-to-job allocation, match technician skill to job requirements, and coordinate with the administration team so the schedule is executable.

- Plan and estimate materials and labour requirements for individual jobs and contracts; review, complete and follow up estimates through to a won or lost outcome.

- Prepare and tender bids for irrigation and landscape lighting scopes, including scopes tendered as part of a general landscaping contractor's bid.

- Requisition supplies and materials, coordinating the field side of parts purchasing so sold work generates timely material requirements and purchase orders.

- Participate in procurement decisions for field equipment, such as vehicle rental and compressors.

- Act as the first management-level point of contact for client and account issues; investigate and resolve client complaints and coordinate billing corrections with administration and finance.

- Maintain job-level financial records and crew personnel records; review profit and loss results, estimate-versus-actual results and billing accuracy; set operational targets for the crew.

- Lead record-keeping and documentation across the company CRM and field software; set the standard for field staff records on every job, including notes, site conditions, time and materials; monitor compliance and maintain the record-keeping policy.

- Prepare and submit progress reports to management, maintain documentation in the company CRM, and log daily time and activity.

- Participate in hiring and onboarding field staff, lead technical onboarding, train and coach technicians, and document performance and conduct issues.

- Oversee, and where required perform, snow removal work during the winter months.

- Perform hands-on irrigation and landscape lighting service and installation work alongside the crew, using field time to train technicians and stay current with site conditions.

Qualifications

Education:
  • High School Diploma,
  • College/Technical Training or Trades Certificate,
Skills & Professional Training

Requirements:

- Completion of secondary school.

- Certified Irrigation Technician (CIT) Level 1 and Level 2, Irrigation Industry Association of British Columbia, or an equivalent irrigation industry certification.

- Five years or more of relevant experience in residential and commercial irrigation system service and installation, including two or more consecutive years as a senior irrigation technician.

- Experience in sales, including on-site estimating, client consultation and estimate follow-up.

- Experience leading or supervising a field crew or team of technicians.

- Experience leading snow removal operations.

- Comprehensive knowledge of scheduling and field-service management software, such as Workiz, Aspire or an equivalent system.

- Ability to read and apply basic financial metrics, including profit and loss results and gross margin, to operational decisions.

- Familiarity with workplace safety requirements, including WorkSafeBC obligations.

- Strong communication, problem-solving and client-service skills, including documenting issues in line with company procedures.

- Valid driver's licence, BC Class 5 or equivalent.

- Candidates currently outside Metro Vancouver must be willing and able to relocate to the North Vancouver, BC area.

Assets:

- Experience with landscape lighting systems.

- Experience with smart irrigation controller platforms, such as Rain Bird LNK and Hunter Hydrawise.

- College diploma, specialized courses or industry-related training in a related trade.

$42.50 to $42.50/hour
