Position Type/ Hours:

This is a temporary full-time position working thirty-five (35) hours per week for approximately twelve (12) months within the Wood Buffalo Recovery Task Force. This position is within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit. This position is located in the community of Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s urban centre.

 

Position Description:

Provides technical expertise relating to wildfire hazard assessment and evaluation of the community’s wildfire readiness. The FireSmart Analyst will support the primary objectives and desired outcomes of the Environment, Rebuild and Mitigate Pillars of the RMWB 2016 Wildfire Recovery Campaign Plan, including creating a defensible space that mitigates future fires from advancing and endangering the community.

 

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·          Provides technical and functional guidance regarding the seven disciplines of FireSmart.

·          Will ensure consistency and legislative compliance.

·          Prepares briefing notes, presentations, reports and special projects - including those of a confidential nature.

·          Analyzes and advises on key issues related to the reconstruction of our community to address and repair wildfire damages.

·          Assesses and remediates the environmental impacts due to the wildfire and implements mitigation measures with a view to improve resiliency into the future.

·          Coordinates the FireSmart program in the region, wildfire risk assessments, wildfire management planning, and supports community planning.

·          Prepares and delivers public education programs related to the FireSmart Program.

·          Uses innovativeness through the coordination, analysis, and delivery of work.

·          Contributes directly to service delivery in the community with involvement in daily operations and overall administration.

·          Aligns all daily activities with the RMWB 2016 Wildfire Recovery Plan and the RMWB 2016 Wildfire Recovery Campaign Plan to ensure desired outcomes are achieved.

 

Qualifications:

·          A diploma in Forestry, Forest Technology, Urban Forestry, Arboriculture or related discipline with three (3) years’ experience in forest management, urban forestry, arboriculture, land management planning or wildfire prevention is required.

OR

·          A certificate in Fire Inspection, Environmental Management or related discipline with five (5) years’ experience in wildland urban interface, wildfire prevention preparedness and mitigation is required.

·          Wildland Fire Training is considered an asset.

·          Experience in post emergency response or recovery environment is considered an asset.

·          Experience working in a public sector environment with unionized and non-unionized employees is considered an asset.

 

You will possess the following:

·          Ability to understand and interpret technical data and maps, work with GIS mapping systems and GPS equipment.

·          Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare reports and presentations.

·          Sound technical, planning, prioritization and project execution skills.

·          Ability to provide guidance to contractors and consultants as required.

·          Strong proficiency with various computer programs (MS Office, Visio, and Project).

·          Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders that establishes trust, credibility and rapport.

·          A strong commitment to the recovery of our community and a positive, results-focused attitude.

·          Must be willing to work outside in all weather conditions.

·          Valid Alberta Class Five (5) driver’s licence is required (clear driving record is an asset).

 

 

Pay Level:

PL 11

 

Salary Range:

$43.77 (Temporary Rate)

                                   

 

In addition to the rate of pay, we offer:

 

-an additional bi-weekly payment of $480 which represents a cost of living allowance
