Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Park Planning Technologist within the Parks and Recreation Department.  Reporting to the Manager, Open Space Planning, the successful candidate will assist in a wide range of parks planning functions with a focus on development of park planning standards, construction and development of park facilities, upgrades to the asset management system, and quality customer service.  Guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph Corporate Administrative Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, excellence and wellness, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision – to be the city that makes a difference.


35 hours per week Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.  Occasional evening work would be required to attend meetings.


  • Assist in the monitoring and inspection of construction and development of park facilities and park projects. Document construction progress and success; ensure all work is proceeding according to plan/tender and take corrective action if necessary (i.e., issuance of change orders).
  • Manage project processes including producing parks/facility tenders, quotations, and proposals; research and prepare specifications and drawings for tendering purposes (products, materials, contractors, and techniques); process invoices and memos.
  • Review landscape plans for new development and redevelopment.
  • Assist and lead park planning and capital projects as needed.
  • Prepare cost estimates for a variety of park projects (e.g. sports fields, lighting, paths and roadways, planting).
  • Establish and regularly update an asset management system to map and track the inventory, location, value and condition of parkland assets and future maintenance needs for all park service components and assist in development of 10 year capital replacement forecasts, especially as it relates to PSAB requirements.
  • Review and comment on site plan submissions, Committee of Adjustment applications and other development applications as required.
  • Develop, update and maintain park planning standards including best practices review, benching and historical data banks for costs, specifications and details.
  • Inventory and report on parkland encroachment and other similar violations of the City Lands Encroachment By-law.
  • Respond to inquiries from management, staff, public, development applicants and elected officials and recommend resolutions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  • Considerable experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through a degree or diploma in Landscape Architecture/Technology or closely related field and 3 - 4 years landscape design and construction experience, preferably in a municipal environment. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must possess a valid Class “G” driver’s licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge and understanding of park planning & construction.
  • Advanced knowledge of Auto CAD 2013 software, GIS and database applications.
  • Demonstrated abilities as a self-starter.
  • Eligible or working towards membership with Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA).
  • Good working knowledge of computer based project management applications MS Project and MS Office.
  • Project management and contract administration experience an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to provide a solution oriented, customer service approach using good judgement, creativity and strategic thinking.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act. 


$32.66 - $40.12 per hour
