Grower Position Available (Full Time)
We are looking to hire an individual to manage our container production division. Responsibilities include organizing production, overseeing plant health, nutrition and pest management. This position requires a strongly self-motivated individual with good team leadership skills, and a level of Horticultural knowledge.
Container Production Manager/Grower Job Description
To maintain and improve container plant health, quality, production efficiencies, growing methods and production planning in an organized manor.
-Gathering information on plant quality and size for office
-Thinking and researching ways for improvement
-Maintain knowledge of inventory as it relates to production planning/sales/contracts
-Pest management: scouting and control implementation if required.
Spring & Summer:
-Assess winter survival of plant material.
- Make and implement plan for growing areas.
-Direct plant spacing when/where required
-Schedule potting sequence.
-Oversee potting quality and efficiency
-Ordering potting soil and sawdust/mulch
-Direct fertilizer topdressing
-Oversee preparation of container areas for putting down newly potted material
-Inspect quality of purchased container stock.
-Make decisions about cutting back plants
-Make decisions about culling poor quality or old plants
-Make decisions regarding what needs staking
-Analyze plant performance relating to nutrition
-Working with Irrigator to implement irrigation best management practices
-Implement research projects
-Assess performance of weed management methods
-Direct and help the container grading crew
-Plan purchases of pots.
-Plan locations and methods for overwintering
Winter (Jan - March):
-Review previous year and plan production for upcoming season.
-Review potting media performance
-Review fertilizer performance and plan purchases
-Consider ideas for research projects with production manager.
-Review research projects of previous year.
-Work through winter task list
Typical spring season hours: 7:00am – 5:30pm (Monday – Friday) & 7:00 – 12:30 (Saturday)
Summer & Fall hours: 7:00am – 4:30pm (Monday – Friday)
Winter hours: 8:00 – 4:30
Participation in the weekend irrigation rotation may be required.
